The New York Times

Each year, the The New York Times commissions an illustrator / designer to conceive of a cover for the “Arts & Leisure” section that captures the spirit of the “Year in Culture.” In 2008, The New York Times chose Yann Legendre. The final cover presents the essence of what it means to be a creative human being—and that we are all inherently creators.

In the Society of News Design’s 30th annual competition, Legendre was recognized with two Awards of Excellence for this work in the categories of “Feature Pages” and “Illustrations.” This illustration assignment represents a core capability of Legendre+Rutter not found with many traditional graphic design studios—the ability to merge art and meaning as a strategy for great communication.

The 8-color silkscreen poster of the cover is available on our store. It was recently named a finalist in the 3rd Bolivian International Poster Biennial.
